Know Before You Visit the Crown

Crown access involves additional requirements and security procedures to preserve the historic structure and ensure visitor safety.

What to Expect

• Accessing the Crown requires climbing 162 stairs through a narrow spiral staircase, as no elevator service is available beyond the Pedestal. The climb is physically demanding, and the National Park Service recommends that visitors with heart, respiratory, mobility, or other conditions that may affect their ability to complete the climb carefully consider whether Crown access is appropriate.
• Visitors who feel uncomfortable continuing may stop at the Pedestal level, where National Park Service Rangers are available to assist.

Ticket Pick-Up & Wristbands

• All Crown visitors must pick up their tickets and wristbands in person at the Box Office located in Castle Clinton at Battery Park. Crown tickets must be picked up before entering the Security Screening Facility or boarding the ferry.
• All Crown guests must receive a wristband at the Box Office. Visitors without wristbands will not be permitted to enter the Crown.
• AVOID TICKET SCAMMERS. Please be aware that the Ticket Scammers along the perimeter of Battery Park do NOT sell genuine Statue of Liberty tickets.

Crown Reserve Rules

To ensure safety and preservation of the monument:

• Visitors are limited to 10 minutes inside the Crown.
• Accessing the Crown requires climbing 377 total steps, including 162 narrow steps from the Pedestal to the Crown.
• There is no elevator access from the Pedestal to the Crown platform.
• Children must be at least 42 inches (107 cm) tall and able to climb stairs independently.
• All minors must be accompanied by an adult. One adult is required for every four children.
• Every member of a party must have a Crown ticket and wristband, including children under the age of four.

Ticket Policies

Because Crown access is extremely limited:

• Only four Crown tickets per household (or credit card holder) are allowed.
• Names are printed on tickets and cannot be changed or transferred.
• The credit card holder must be present to pick up the tickets.
• All ticket holders must be present at the Box Office to receive wristbands.
• Visitors must present a matching photo ID when accessing the monument (except minors without ID).
• Only one Crown reservation is allowed within a six-month period.

Ticket Timing

• The time printed on your ticket indicates when you should join the queue to enter the security screening facility, NOT a specific departure or time you will enter the Crown.
• Priority entry of 2PM or later will not allow enough time to visit Ellis Island. Please plan your visit accordingly.

Last Entrance to the Crown

The final entry time to access the Crown varies by season.

• Jan 1 - June 13 - 3:30 PM
• June 14 - Sep 1 - 5:00 PM
• Sep 2 - Oct 13 - 4:00 PM
• Oct 14 - Dec 31 - 3:30 PM
• Christmas Eve - 1:30 PM

Security & Storage

All visitors must pass through airport-grade security screening before boarding the ferry and again before entering the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

• Water in a plastic bottle, a phone, a camera, and medicine are the only items you are allowed to carry to the crown.
• Items such as bags, backpacks, food, drinks, and strollers are not permitted inside the monument. Self-service lockers ($0.25) are available on Liberty Island before entering the monument. All items must be collected after your visit.
• The National Park Service is not responsible for valuables placed in lockers.
• Lockers are NOT available at the security screening facilities at Battery Park or Liberty State Park. Suitcases, carry-on luggage, and other large parcels will not be permitted on the ferry systems or at Liberty and Ellis Islands.
• Prohibited items include drones, scooters, skateboards, firearms, explosives or flammables, knives or sharp objects, pepper spray, mace, and all markers (permanent or erasable). Please visit NPS Security and Standards for a full list of prohibited items.
